Challenges

The problem JVN was facing was that end user had to go to the checkout and apply promo code to see the discount. They wanted to add this promo code functionality in the mini cart without creating an app and extra manageability and cost. So that user can add the promo code to the mini cart and can see the discount. 

Solution

One of the challenges we encountered is that Shopify’s storefront API does not currently support the application of promo codes. This limitation creates a hurdle because there is no built-in mechanism to add or apply promo codes prior to the checkout process. To overcome this obstacle, we had to explore alternative methods to achieve the desired outcome.
To address this issue, we developed a custom mini cart that utilizes Shopify’s cart API to gather data. Fortunately, Shopify provides a promo code verification API that we can use. However, we manually performed all the necessary calculations, including those Shopify normally handles for all products, as well as the math needed to replicate Shopify’s checkout process. As a result, the mini cart displays data that is consistent with Shopify’s calculations. Once the user proceeds to the checkout, we apply the promo code there, ensuring a smooth and accurate transaction.

This has greatly improved the user experience and made the checkout process more efficient and streamlined.
