Executive Summary
A multi-channel BigCommerce merchant needed a scalable way to publish and maintain FAQs at both product and category level across US, Canada, and European storefronts, then display them on Product Detail Pages and Category Pages. Native custom fields could not store structured Q/A content reliably, had no channel targeting, and required developer involvement for every update.
Folio3 eCommerce built a Laravel and React FAQ Management module that stores FAQ content as JSON in BigCommerce Catalog Metafields, exposes public APIs with channel filtering, processes bulk CSV uploads through queued jobs, and renders FAQ tabs and accordions in the Stencil theme using the active storefront channel ID. Merchandisers now manage all FAQ content in one admin module without theme edits, custom-field size failures, or per-storefront duplication.
The Problem
The client needed a scalable way to publish and maintain FAQs at both product and category level across multiple BigCommerce channels including US, Canada, and Europe, then display them on the Product Detail Page and Category Page.
The exact bottleneck: BigCommerce custom fields are poorly suited for structured Q/A content due to string limits, no clean multi-entry JSON, and weak channel targeting. Manual theme edits and one-off metafield updates did not scale for catalog-wide FAQ management, multi-channel storefronts, or non-technical merchandisers.
The Limitation
Default BigCommerce does not provide out of the box:
- An admin FAQ management UI for products and categories
- Structured multi-Q/A storage with sequence ordering
- Per-channel FAQ targeting on multi-storefront setups
- PDP and PLP rendering with merge rules for product versus category FAQs
- Bulk CSV upload with validation and queue logging
- Feature flags to enable or disable FAQs globally or only on category pages
Stencil metafields can store data, but without a middleware app and theme integration, merchants cannot reliably manage, filter by channel, or govern display behavior at scale.
The Fix
Folio3 eCommerce built an FAQ Management Module across a Laravel BigCommerce middleware app and the Stencil storefront theme.
What Folio3 eCommerce Built and Reconfigured
1. Storage via BigCommerce Catalog Metafields API
- Namespace: faq_data
- Keys: product_faq and category_faq
- Permission: read_and_sf_access
- JSON structure per FAQ: seq, question, answer, channel_ids
- One metafield container per product or category, which avoids custom-field string limits
2. Admin Middleware using React and Laravel
- Tabs: SKU and Product FAQ, Category FAQ, Bulk Upload, and Configuration
- CRUD, product autocomplete, category-tree path picker, and per-row channel assignment
- Channel-scoped category grid with filter-then-paginate so channel lists stay accurate
- CSV bulk upload via queued job for products and categories, with an optional Channels column
- Configuration flags: global FAQ on and off, show category FAQs on PLP, and PDP display mode covering merge, product-only, and category-only options
3. Public Storefront APIs
- GET /api/get-faqs with product_id and channel_id parameters: merges product and category FAQs by configuration, filtered by channel
- GET /api/get-category-faqs with category_id and channel_id parameters: PLP FAQs gated by feature flags
4. Stencil Theme
- PDP: New FAQ tab with accordion UI; tab is hidden when the feature is off or no FAQs exist
- PLP: FAQs displayed under category description, synced with existing Read More and Read Less controls
- Channel ID: Injected from settings.channel_id so each channel branch requests the correct FAQs
- Stack: BigCommerce Catalog Metafields API, Laravel middleware, React with MUI admin, Stencil theme JavaScript and templates, and queued CSV processing
The Result
- Merchandisers manage FAQs in one admin module instead of making theme edits or one-off metafield updates
- Multi-channel storefronts show channel-correct FAQs on PDP and category pages
- Bulk CSV intake supports catalog-scale FAQ publishing without manual entry
- Global and PLP feature flags allow safe rollout and kill-switch behavior without redeploying the theme
- Structured metafield JSON removed the custom-field size and format bottleneck for Q/A content
8 Architecture Questions Before You Build Channel-Aware FAQs on BigCommerce
- Where will FAQ content live? Prefer a single metafield JSON container using faq_data with product_faq and category_faq keys over custom fields if you need multi-entry Q/A, sequencing, and channel targeting.
- Do you need product FAQs, category FAQs, or both? PDP often merges SKU FAQs with category FAQs. PLP usually shows category FAQs only. Design storage and APIs for both.
- How will multi-channel stores filter content? Embed channel_ids on each FAQ and pass the active storefront channel_id from Stencil settings.channel_id into public APIs.
- Who owns day-to-day updates? Non-technical users need list and detail screens, autocomplete, and category-tree pickers, not raw API access.
- Will you upload at catalog scale? Use queued CSV processing with validation and failure logs so bulk imports do not block the admin UI.
- What display rules apply on PDP? Support merge, product-only, and category-only modes so merchandising can control priority without code changes.
- How do you gate rollout safely? A global enable and disable flag plus a PLP-specific flag let you ship PDP first, then turn on category-page FAQs.
- How should storefront UX behave? PDP tab with accordion and PLP FAQs under the description with existing Read More and Read Less controls. Keep UX consistent with the theme.
Platform and Option Recommendations
- Best for multi-channel BigCommerce merchants needing SKU and category FAQs with admin self-service: Metafield-backed FAQ module with middleware APIs and Stencil rendering.
- Best for catalog-scale content operations: CSV bulk upload with queue logging and channel columns.
- Best for phased rollout: Feature flags covering global and PLP options, plus display-mode configuration.
- Not ideal alone: Native custom fields or theme-only hardcoding when you need structured Q/A, channels, and merchandiser ownership.
