What is the first step in building a B2B ecommerce portal?

Data and architecture cleanup is the mandatory first phase (Phase 0). You must normalize product specs, clean ERP customer lists, and map pricing rules before writing any web code. Distributors who skip this phase encounter broken pricing syncs and buyer trust failures within weeks of launch.

Can the ecommerce platform handle our custom contract pricing?

No. Contract pricing must live in your ERP as the single source of truth. The ecommerce platform displays these prices via an iPaaS middleware sync. Attempting to maintain contract logic natively in the storefront admin creates a second source of truth that diverges from the ERP over time.

How much does a mid-market B2B portal cost to build?

Total build investment ranges from $85,000 to $160,000 over 5 to 7 months, covering data ETL, agency build, and ERP integration. Annual operating costs range from $25,000 to $45,000 for platform licensing, iPaaS middleware, and B2B app licenses.

Why is BigCommerce B2B Edition recommended over Shopify Plus for distributors?

BigCommerce B2B Edition includes native sales rep masquerading, buyer portals, matrix pricing, and quote management without transaction fee penalties. Shopify Plus B2B requires significant app stacking to support multi-tier approval workflows and custom RFQ pipelines common in industrial distribution.

How long does it take to migrate a large SKU catalog to a B2B portal?

The full implementation runs 5 to 7 months. Phase 0 data cleanup alone takes 8 weeks for a catalog of several thousand SKUs, assuming the ERP data requires normalization and taxonomy standardization.

What ERP systems integrate with BigCommerce B2B Edition?

BigCommerce connects to Prophet 21, Epicor, NetSuite, Infor, and Microsoft Dynamics via iPaaS middleware layers such as Celigo, Boomi, or custom API middleware. The ERP drives pricing, customer contracts, inventory availability, and order status.
