Executive Summary
An enterprise ecommerce client in the premium meat industry needed a better way to manage delivery dates for perishable products such as Wagyu beef. Customers often buy these products for birthdays, holidays, celebrations, or gifts, which makes the delivery date part of the purchase decision.
We built a custom delivery calendar in Adobe Commerce and connected it to FedEx rate calculation. Because checking several delivery dates and shipping methods generates a large number of API requests, we also added caching and a fallback flow to handle FedEx rate limits and temporary service outages.
The result gives customers control over delivery while keeping checkout reliable and reducing the risk of lost sales from shipping-service issues.
The Problem
A standard shipping experience could not resolve five challenges for this business.
Customers buying fresh meat often need the order to arrive on a specific date, especially for gifts and celebrations. A standard delivery estimate gave them no control over when the order would land.
Availability changes with location, requested date, shipping service availability, seasonal demand, and holidays. The system had to decide which dates to offer instead of treating every future date as available.
Costs and available services vary by order, destination, delivery date, and shipping method. Relevant FedEx information needed to appear as part of the date selection.
Evaluating multiple dates and shipping methods generates a significant number of requests. That risked exhausting the FedEx API rate limit and losing shipping information at checkout.
A carrier-side failure during checkout can stop a customer from completing a purchase, which directly means a lost sale.
The Solution
A date-aware delivery solution in Adobe Commerce that connects the customer’s requested date with shipping availability and FedEx rates.
A custom calendar lets customers pick the date they want their order delivered. The selected date is attached to the order and carries through to fulfillment, which suits occasion-based purchases where timing matters.
FedEx is integrated into the delivery workflow to retrieve applicable rates based on the order, destination, delivery date, and available shipping methods. Because this multiplies API calls, it needed protection against rate limits and outages.
Previously retrieved shipping information is reused where appropriate instead of repeatedly requesting the same data from FedEx. This cuts unnecessary API requests and protects the integration from rate limits.
When a fresh FedEx response is unavailable, the fallback flow handles the rate request so a temporary carrier issue does not interrupt checkout.
Customer Benefits
Greater control and visibility when buying perishable products.
Customers choose a preferred date instead of relying on a generic delivery estimate.
Deliveries can be planned around birthdays, holidays, and celebrations.
Applicable shipping information and rates appear as part of the delivery selection.
Caching and the fallback flow limit the effect of temporary FedEx API issues on the purchase.
Business Impact
The solution gives the business more control over the delivery experience and makes the shipping integration more resilient.
✓ Better management of delivery-date availability
✓ Improved support for seasonal and occasion-based purchases
✓ Fewer repeated FedEx API requests and better protection against rate limits
✓ Greater resilience when FedEx is temporarily unavailable
✓ Better alignment between delivery selection and fulfillment
✓ Lower risk of checkout disruption and lost sales from carrier integration issues
A delivery calendar alone is not enough when availability and rates depend on external carrier services. The design has to cover both the customer experience and the reliability of the carrier integration.
Combining a delivery-date calendar, FedEx integration, caching, and a fallback flow gives businesses selling perishable or time-sensitive products a more reliable and controlled delivery experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Perishable products have a limited shelf life and are often bought for specific occasions. Customers may need the product to arrive on a particular date rather than within a general delivery window.
Shipping availability and rates vary by destination, delivery requirements, and shipping method. The FedEx integration retrieves applicable shipping information as part of the delivery workflow.
Evaluating multiple delivery dates and shipping methods generates a significant number of rate requests. That increases API usage and can exhaust the available FedEx API rate limit.
Caching reuses previously retrieved shipping information where appropriate, which reduces repeated requests to the FedEx API.
The fallback flow provides an alternative way to handle the shipping-rate request, so a temporary FedEx service issue does not unnecessarily interrupt the customer’s checkout.
Yes. It suits any Adobe Commerce or Magento business where delivery timing matters, particularly those selling perishable, temperature-sensitive, seasonal, or occasion-based products.
